Customers can't pay on my app: the pay button does nothing, or the order never shows up
Updated
A customer writes: "I tried to pay and nothing happened." Or you find a payment in Stripe but no order, no upgrade, no confirmation email. It worked when you tested it.
Why it happens
Payment on a live app breaks in one of three places, and each has a different cause.
Possible causes
- The pay button does nothing: the function that creates the checkout fails on the live site, often because a key was set only for testing or never added to the live environment.
- Checkout opens but the payment fails: test and live are mixed, for example live keys with test product or price IDs. Stripe says objects in one mode are not available in the other.
- They paid but nothing happened: your app learns about a payment from a webhook, and it was set up for test mode only, or uses the wrong signing secret.
You can't see it yourself
You're signed in, your customers aren't. You pay with a test card, in test mode, or as the owner. Real customers use real cards on the live site.
